SDSA Membership Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM, at Grady’s Restaurant,
by Roberto Flores and Lynne Armstrong.
Lynne introduced the guest speaker, Josephine Titsworth,
a member of the Board of Directors of the National Transgender Advocacy
Coalition. She is a social worker,
certified mediator and a transgender educator.
During her appearance at Stonewall, Titsworth used
her life and personal journey to help explain the many nuances of the
"trans" world. She addressed questions that helped clarify the
meaning of terms like cross dresser, transgender, transsexual, intersexed, transgenderist and
others.
Titsworth recounted influential experiences in her
life -- from the time she was a six year old boy and realized she liked wearing
her grandmother’s nightgown to her years as a Coast Guardsman who liked to
dress up in private. She is one of the founding members of Houston’s Society
for the Second Self that today numbers hundreds of members.
Today Titsworth lives in Baytown, Texas and works as
a social worker and researcher who advocates for transgender foster children.
She is currently working on a research project to study the self-esteem and
life satisfaction of trans people of color.
Lynne reminded the membership of t-shirts and bumper stickers that are still for sale and also that SDSA Community Awards Recommendations are to be filled out and returned to Philip Barcena or James Poindexter.
Roberto continued with the meeting. There was no secretary’s report as her computer is still not working. Lynne reported that the New Members reception was a big success thanks to Dan Graney and Roberto Flores’ hospitality. The Claudia Kennedy reception will be held at Lynne and Olga’s home this Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00 noon, any one interested in attending may sign up with Richard Moon. The Bexar County Democratic Women’s Annual Banquet will be held Saturday evening at the Radisson Hotel. Tickets for Babette’s feast were sold. The drawing was held and the winner was drawn, Wendy Tallman.
Sam Sanchez of Q San Antonio announced that Alamo City Men’s Chorale was sponsoring a screening of “Hair Spray” on July 26th. “Southern Baptist Sissies” will have a Q San Antonio night during which tickets may be purchased at a discount. The date will be announced later.
Jamie Lewis asked for volunteers to help with the decorating for the SDSA Banquet, since we only have two hours to put up decorations.
The issue of Shannon Bailey was brought up by Ted Switzer and Lynne announced that it would be placed on the agenda for the next month’s meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Cristina M. Ramirez,
Secretary
